About Me

My Story: a legacy inspired by my military family, heartwarming moments, and international performances.
James the piper at Venachar Lochside

Inspired by my father, a Major in the British Army and former piper, I embarked on my bagpiping journey at age 7. It began with a simple lesson on the chanter, a moment that connected me with my father's legacy. I was captivated, leading to formal lessons and a deep-rooted passion for bagpiping.

In the warmth of my clan-sized family, my journey with the bagpipes found its heart. Stepping in for my father to play at my Aunt's wedding, a role he couldn't fulfil due to his brain tumour, was a moment of deep connection and emotion. This experience, where my music echoed my family's resilience and love, resonated with everyone present. With each wedding performance, from my Uncle Harry's to my Dad's at Dalmahoy Hotel, my dream of becoming a dedicated wedding bagpiper strengthened. To me, this is more than just playing an instrument; it's about carrying forward a legacy and touching lives, something I hope resonates with you as it does with me.

My bagpiping journey expanded internationally with performances at the Bruges Tattoo in Belgium. Having been back performing in Belgium every year, it is safe to say that these noisy wooden sticks treat me well. Furthermore, I'm honoured to be a piper for the 'Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo', where I’ve performed for over 200,000 people over 27 days, and in Oslo, Norway uniting with a diverse array of instruments and nationalities. This, along with my competitive experiences at the World Pipe Band Championships with various pipe bands, encapsulates my passion and growth in the world of bagpiping.

My bagpipe music so far has touched many hearts and reached audiences through platforms such as the BBC and Channel 4. I've been the official piper for the 'Bloody Scotland' book festival, a cherished role for three years and counting. My passion breathes life into every performance, whether at weddings, funerals, or other meaningful events. Bringing the emotive essence of bagpipes to these diverse occasions is a privilege, and I eagerly anticipate the new narratives my music will unfold.
